Valdez South Boat Harbor & Marina

A Working Alaskan Marina

The South Boat Harbor is the heart of Valdez's small-craft fleet, a protected basin where commercial fishing boats, charter vessels and private yachts share rows of floating docks. Throughout the season the marina hums with crews loading gear, deckhands tending lines and skiffs threading between the slips, a portrait of everyday maritime life in coastal Alaska.

The Harbor Setting

A long rock breakwater shelters the basin from the open water of Prince William Sound, while gangways and a distinctive blue covered ramp connect the shore to the floating piers. Beyond the masts and hulls, the steep Chugach Mountains rise straight from the sea, their slopes often laced with snow even into summer.

Valdez and Prince William Sound

Valdez sits at the head of a deep glacial fjord on the eastern edge of Prince William Sound, framed by some of the highest coastal mountains in North America. Famous as the southern terminus of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline and as a world-class halibut and salmon sport-fishing destination, the town's identity is bound tightly to this harbor.

What the Camera Shows

The camera pans across the harbor, sweeping from the packed marina to the breakwater and the channel leading out to the Sound. Viewers can watch vessels coming and going, follow the rhythm of the tides against the docks and take in the dramatic mountain backdrop that surrounds this remote Alaskan port.
