The Trans-Ili Alatau Skyline

The dominant feature of this view is the Trans-Ili Alatau (Zailiysky Alatau), a formidable range that forms the northern edge of the Tian Shan system. Its highest summit, Talgar Peak, reaches almost five thousand metres, and a long chain of glaciated ridges stretches across the horizon behind the city.

A City Beneath the Mountains

In the foreground spreads Almaty, the largest city and former capital of Kazakhstan. Tree-lined boulevards, mid-rise apartment blocks and the green canopy of the Auezov district fill the frame, illustrating how the metropolis presses right up against the steep mountain front.

Geography of the Northern Tian Shan

The Tian Shan ("Mountains of Heaven") arc for hundreds of kilometres across Central Asia. The Trans-Ili Alatau is its most accessible spur, feeding the rivers and reservoirs that sustain Almaty and offering world-class hiking, climbing and mountaineering within reach of the city.
