About This Webcam
Everything you need to know about this live stream
What You'll See
This live aurora camera looks out over a quiet stretch of countryside inside Þingvellir National Park. A stand of conifers rises on the left, the roof of a small hut sits in the foreground, and beyond it a flat meadow with a small pond runs to a low, wooded ridge on the horizon. Most of the frame is open sky, the stage for the northern lights.
Aurora Data on Screen
The feed is run by Aurora Reykjavík – The Northern Lights Center, the Reykjavík museum devoted to the aurora. Its on-screen overlay shows the live Kp index and the Bz component of the interplanetary magnetic field, together with a real-time clock, so viewers can judge at a glance whether geomagnetic conditions favour a display.
About Þingvellir
Þingvellir is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the place where Iceland's parliament, the Alþingi, first met in 930. The park lies in a dramatic rift valley where the North American and Eurasian plates pull apart, beside Þingvallavatn, the country's largest natural lake.
Aurora Watching on the Golden Circle
About an hour's drive from Reykjavík, Þingvellir sits far from the capital's street lights, which makes it a favoured spot for aurora hunters touring the Golden Circle. When solar activity is strong, the camera's wide view of the sky lets viewers anywhere follow the aurora borealis in real time.
