The Cove and Its Waters

Sotoura Beach forms a near-perfect crescent of fine pale sand wrapped around a calm, shallow bay. Sheltered by headlands on either side, its clear emerald-to-turquoise water makes it one of the most popular swimming and bathing beaches on the southern Izu coast.

Coastal Landscape

A small forested rock islet sits just offshore, a signature feature of the bay, while wooded promontories and rocky shorelines enclose the cove. Beyond them stretches the open Pacific, with distant islands of the Izu archipelago often visible on the horizon.

Setting on the Izu Peninsula

Located in Shimoda at the tip of the Izu Peninsula, the beach is backed by a compact seaside community of lodgings and eateries. The mild maritime climate and protected waters draw families, swimmers and snorkelers to this scenic stretch of coast.
