The Sacred Bridge of Nikko

The Shinkyo Bridge is one of Japan's most celebrated bridges, its brilliant vermilion arch spanning the gorge of the Daiya River. By tradition it may only be crossed on foot for special ceremonies, standing as the ceremonial threshold between the town and the sacred mountains.

Futarasan Shrine and the Mountain Shrines

The bridge belongs to the Nikko Futarasan Shrine and forms part of the Shrines and Temples of Nikko, a UNESCO World Heritage ensemble. It marks the historic pilgrim route toward the shrine complex tucked into the surrounding cedar forest.

River and Forested Gorge

Below the arch, the Daiya River tumbles over rocks between densely wooded banks. The steep slopes of the Nikko mountains rise on every side, giving the scene its dramatic natural backdrop.
