A Summit Observatory on Campo dei Fiori
The G.V. Schiaparelli Astronomical Observatory sits at 1,226 meters on the panoramic ridge of Campo dei Fiori, a Prealpine massif rising above the city of Varese in Lombardy. Its distinctive metallic dome houses the instruments used by the local astronomical society for research and public outreach.
Looking East Over the Lombard Plain
This particular feed is the observatory’s east-facing view, framing the dome and a slender telecom mast against the wide lowlands stretching toward Milan and the Po Valley. From this vantage point the plain unfolds in every direction, a patchwork of towns and fields fading into the haze on the horizon.
A Century of Skywatching
Operated by the Societร Astronomica G.V. Schiaparelli as part of the wider Centro Geofisico Prealpino network, the site has been a hub for astronomy and geophysics in the region for generations. Alongside this east view, sister cameras on the same summit watch the north and west horizons.
