About Santa María Volcano and Santiaguito

Santa María is a massive stratovolcano in the western highlands of Guatemala, rising to 3,772 metres above sea level. Its southwestern flank hosts the Santiaguito lava dome complex, which has been in near-continuous eruption since 1922, making it one of the longest-lived eruptions on Earth. Explosive events frequently produce towering columns of volcanic ash and pyroclastic material.

Volcanic Activity and Eruption Style

Santiaguito is characterized by repeated Vulcanian and effusive eruptions, generating ash plumes that regularly reach several kilometres in height, lava flows, and pyroclastic density currents along its flanks. The dome complex consists of four overlapping vents — El Caliente, La Mitad, El Monje, and El Brujo — with El Caliente currently the most active.

Geography and Setting

The volcano dominates the skyline of Quetzaltenango (Xela), Guatemala's second-largest city and the cultural capital of the western highlands. The surrounding landscape blends rugged volcanic terrain with indigenous Maya communities and fertile highland valleys.

Scientific and Cultural Significance

Santa María and Santiaguito are intensively monitored by INSIVUMEH (Guatemala's volcanological authority) and international research institutions. The dome complex serves as a natural laboratory for studying lava dome growth, gravitational collapse, and eruption dynamics, contributing important data to volcanic hazard assessment across Central America.
