An Iconic Active Volcano
Sakurajima is one of the most emblematic and frequently erupting volcanoes on Earth, having produced hundreds of small eruptions in a single year. This distant vantage from Tarumizu frames the whole mountain and the plume of vapour that so often crowns its three peaks.
Across Kinkล Bay
The camera looks out over the calm waters of Kinkล Bay, the drowned caldera that separates Tarumizu from the volcanic peninsula. The wide expanse of sheltered water gives a sense of the volcano's true scale and its intimate relationship with the everyday life of the coast.
The Tarumizu Ferry Port
In the foreground the Tarumizu ferry terminal connects the town to Kagoshima across the bay. Vessels come and go against the backdrop of the volcano, giving the scene a living, working character beyond the geological spectacle.
A Window on Kyushu
Overlooking a corner of southern Kyushu, the view captures the distinctive meeting of a bustling port community and a powerful natural landmark that has shaped the region's landscape and culture for centuries.
