A Harbour Entrance on the Tasman Coast
Whฤingaroa Harbour, better known as Raglan Harbour, is a large drowned river valley on the rugged west coast of New Zealand's North Island. Its narrow entrance, framed by headlands and dunes, funnels the harbour's tides out to the Tasman Sea and builds the sand bar known locally as the Raglan Bar.
Why Boaties Watch the Bar
Bar crossings are among the most demanding moments of any trip on the North Island's west coast. Swell, tide and current combine over the shallows to raise steep, breaking waves, so skippers check the entrance before committing to it. The Raglan Sportfishing Club shares this feed so members and visiting boaties can judge the bar from shore and plan a safer passage.
Raglan, a Coastal Surf Town
Just inside the harbour, the town of Raglan is a relaxed seaside community famed among surfers for the long left-hand point breaks of Manu Bay and Whale Bay, and for the black-sand expanse of Ngarunui Beach. The sheltered harbour is a favourite for kayaking, paddle-boarding and fishing, and its wharf is lined with small cafรฉs, galleries and charter operators.
Mount Karioi and the Surrounding Coast
South of the entrance, the forested slopes of Mount Karioi rise above the coast, and walking tracks lead to lookouts over the harbour mouth and the open ocean. Together with this live view of the bar, they make Raglan a rewarding stop on any journey along the Waikato coast.
