Poppit Sands Beach and Teifi Estuary
OnlineThis live webcam watches over Poppit Sands, a broad, dune-backed beach at the mouth of the River Teifi near St Dogmaels, at the northern end of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.
Mounted on the beach's surf lifesaving club as a life-saving camera, it follows the surf line and the shifting channel of the estuary, beside the RNLI Cardigan lifeboat station on the shore of Cardigan Bay.
About This Webcam
Everything you need to know about this live stream
A wide beach at the mouth of the Teifi
Poppit Sands stretches along the southern shore of the Teifi estuary, where the river meets Cardigan Bay. At low tide the sand runs out for hundreds of metres, backed by a belt of marram-covered dunes and facing the headland of Gwbert and Cardigan Island across the water.
A camera for beach safety
The stream runs as a life-saving camera from the Poppit Sands surf lifesaving club: it lets lifeguards, club volunteers and visitors read the state of the sea before stepping onto the sand. The RNLI Cardigan lifeboat station stands beside the beach, and the estuary's sandbar and fast tidal currents make this view a practical tool as much as a scenic one.
Gateway to the Pembrokeshire Coast Path
The beach lies at the northern end of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, a short walk from St Dogmaels, where the 186-mile Pembrokeshire Coast Path begins. Walkers set out from here toward Cemaes Head, whose cliffs are the highest on this coast.
Wildlife and things to do
Cardigan Bay is home to one of Britain's largest groups of bottlenose dolphins, and grey seals haul out along the nearby coast. On the beach itself, surfing, paddleboarding and family swimming share the space with birdwatchers scanning the estuary mudflats for waders and wildfowl.
