A Square Beneath the Cordillera Blanca

The Plaza de Armas de Huaraz anchors the historic center of Huaraz, capital of the Áncash region and the principal staging point for treks into the Cordillera Blanca. Rebuilt after the devastating 1970 earthquake, today's square blends orderly gardens with civic architecture at an elevation of over three thousand meters.

Andean Gateway City

Huaraz sits within the Callejón de Huaylas, a long valley flanked by some of Peru's highest peaks. The plaza serves as the social heart of a city that draws mountaineers and travelers heading toward Huascarán National Park and its glacial lakes.

A Living Urban Scene

Traffic circles the square along Avenida Luzuriaga and its side streets, while pedestrians cross between the gardens and the surrounding shops, restaurants, and the city's cathedral. The camera, hosted from the Encuentro de los Andes restaurant terrace, offers a continuous street-level vantage of the plaza's daily rhythm.

Architectural Landmarks

The twin towers of the Cathedral of Huaraz rise above the plaza's eastern side, a modern replacement for the colonial-era church destroyed in the earthquake. Rows of pine and eucalyptus trees, fountains, and flower beds complete a square that remains the civic and commemorative center of the city.
