Mounted on the upper parapet of the American Century tower on Main Street, this camera frames a purpose-built gravel nest tray that stands in for the sheer cliff ledges peregrines choose in the wild. The concrete walls and steel rail of the high-rise terrace form a sheltered corner far above the streets of midtown Kansas City.

The Fastest Birds Alive

Peregrine falcons stoop at speeds beyond 300 km/h, and this urban pair hunts the airspace over the Country Club Plaza district and the surrounding boulevards. The tray is where eggs are laid and incubated, and where downy chicks eventually branch out toward their first flight.

Conservation in Plain Sight

The nest box is a collaborative project supported by the Missouri Department of Conservation, USDA Wildlife Services and Stantec, part of the long recovery effort that brought this once-endangered raptor back to North American cities. Partner signage fixed to the wall marks the edge of the frame.

What You Can See

Beyond the ledge the lens catches the wooded canopy and low rooflines of the surrounding neighborhoods stretching toward the horizon. It is a rare vantage point that turns an office tower into a working piece of wildlife habitat.
