A Rare Look Inside a Falcon Nest

Mounted high on the Spitalkirche church tower, this nest box gives an unusually close view of peregrine falcons, birds capable of the fastest dives in the animal kingdom. The enclosed box mirrors the rocky ledges falcons naturally favor for nesting.

Conservation Partnership

The nest box and its camera were installed through a collaboration between the town of Weißenburg in Bayern and regional bird-conservation groups, part of an ongoing effort to monitor and protect the local falcon population under strict wildlife-protection rules.

Life in the Gravel Scrape

The gravel substrate lining the box floor is typical of a natural falcon scrape, where eggs are laid directly on the ground rather than in a woven nest. An onboard microphone captures the calls and wingbeats of the resident pair.
