A Wild Eyrie in the Hebrides
This camera looks straight into a working white-tailed eagle nest built in the conifer woodland surrounding Uist Forest Retreat. The massive nest of interwoven sticks, layered over many seasons, is a permanent fixture of the treetops, anchored among the mossy branches of the surrounding spruce.
Britain's Largest Bird of Prey
The white-tailed eagle is one of the United Kingdom's most imposing raptors, with a wingspan that can exceed two metres. North Uist, in the Outer Hebrides, is a stronghold for these sea eagles, whose territory stretches across the surrounding moorland, lochs and coastline.
A Window for Research
Beyond its spectacular view, the nest is a tool for science. The footage contributes to long-term study of eagle diet and nesting behaviour led by Redwing Ecology, offering a rare real-time record of prey deliveries and how these wild birds raise their young.
The Hebridean Setting
The retreat lies amid the remote woodland and skerries of North Uist, a landscape steeped in Gaelic place-names and Viking history. The view captures the tangled forest canopy that makes this corner of the Outer Hebrides a refuge for wildlife.
