A Busy Mainline Crossing

This camera frames the Fisher Ferry Road grade crossing at milepost 306.1 on Norfolk Southern's Danville District, a key segment of the Piedmont Division and the former Southern Railway mainline linking Washington, D.C. with Atlanta. Crossing gates, signals and the double-track right-of-way fill the frame as traffic rolls through.

What Rolls Through

An average of thirty-five trains a day pass this point — Norfolk Southern intermodal, manifest and unit trains, plus Amtrak's Crescent, Carolinian and Piedmont passenger services. It is one of the busiest train-watching locations in the American Southeast.

The Historic Depot Setting

The cameras are hosted by the Thomasville Visitors Center, set inside the historic 1871 Southern Railway depot. The surrounding streetscape, parking and the depot grounds give this railfan vantage point a distinctly small-town Piedmont character.
