The Nippori-Toneri Liner

The view is dominated by the elevated guideway of the Nippori-Toneri Liner, an automated, driverless rubber-tyred transit system that links the Nippori hub with the northern reaches of Adachi City. Its slender concrete viaduct curves through the neighbourhood on regularly spaced columns, a hallmark of Tokyo's compact urban rail engineering.

A Yazaike Streetscape

Beneath and beside the track runs an ordinary local street lined with low-rise apartments, small shops and family homes. Utility poles and tangled overhead wires, parked vehicles and pedestrian crossings give the scene the authentic texture of a working Tokyo suburb rather than a tourist district.

Adachi City, Northeastern Tokyo

Yazaike sits in Adachi City, one of the special wards on the northern edge of central Tokyo. The area is largely residential, knit together by the Liner and a dense grid of streets, and offers a candid window onto the rhythms of an everyday Japanese ward.
