The Heart of Nevsky Avenue

The view captures the monumental intersection where Nevsky Avenue crosses Sadovaya Street, one of the busiest crossroads in St. Petersburg. Designed in the 18th century, the avenue runs arrow-straight through the city's historic core, lined with palaces, cathedrals and arcades.

The Great Gostiny Dvor

Dominating the foreground is the vast Neoclassical facade of Bolshoy Gostiny Dvor, a department store stretching for over a kilometre. Begun in 1757 and later redesigned by Vallin de la Mothe, it ranks among the first shopping arcades ever built and remains a celebrated retail landmark.

A Living Urban Crossroads

Cars, buses and trolleybuses glide along the broad carriageway beneath a web of overhead wires, while pedestrians emerge from the underground passage at the camera's base. The City Duma tower rises on the skyline, a graceful counterpoint to the arcade's long colonnade.
