A Panoramic Coastal Vantage
Mounted on the observation floor of the Nemunooka roadside station, this camera looks out over the town of Kisakata, part of Nikaho City in Akita Prefecture. The wide-angle vantage takes in the rooftops of the settlement, the coastal highway, and the rolling countryside beyond, offering a sweeping introduction to this stretch of Japan's northern Sea of Japan coast.
The Legendary Kisakata Shoreline
Kisakata was once celebrated alongside Matsushima as one of Japan's two great scenic shores, its lagoon scattered with the Kujuku-jima โ ninety-nine wooded islets. The great haiku poet Matsuo Bashล visited and wrote of the view during his journey along the Narrow Road to the Deep North. A powerful earthquake in 1804 uplifted the seabed, and today the former islands rise as small hills amid the surrounding rice fields.
Mount Chokai in the Distance
On clear days the camera's backdrop is dominated by Mount Chokai, a graceful stratovolcano straddling the border of Akita and Yamagata prefectures. Nicknamed Dewa Fuji for its symmetrical profile, the mountain rises directly behind the coastal plain and anchors the wider panorama captured from the station's upper floors.
A Waypoint on the Coastal Road
Beyond the view, the roadside station itself serves travelers along the coastal route with local produce, a hot-spring bathhouse, and an observation tower. The camera's elevated position captures the everyday rhythm of this working michi-no-eki alongside the enduring natural drama of shoreline, hills, and volcano.
