Mount Bromo Crater Cam

An Active Volcano in the Tengger Caldera

Mount Bromo is a stratovolcano standing inside the enormous Tengger caldera in East Java. Though it reaches only about 2,329 metres, its perpetually smoking crater and stark, treeless slopes make it one of the most recognisable volcanic landmarks in Indonesia. This camera looks directly down into the active vent, revealing the layered crater walls and the steam and gas that rise from deep within the Earth.

The Sea of Sand

Surrounding Bromo is the Sea of Sand, a sweeping plain of volcanic ash and fine sand that fills the floor of the ancient caldera. From this elevated, top-down vantage the crater appears to float within a barren, otherworldly landscape, edged by the steep ridges of the caldera rim. The constantly shifting light across the ash field gives the scene a raw, lunar character.

Part of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park

The volcano lies within Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, a protected reserve that also encompasses Mount Semeru, the highest peak in Java. The park safeguards a unique high-altitude volcanic ecosystem and is sacred to the Tengger people, who hold the annual Yadnya Kasada ceremony here, casting offerings into Bromo's crater.

A Living Geological Window

Bromo's ongoing activity makes it a natural laboratory for observing volcanic processes. The plume drifting from its vent signals the slow release of pressure from the magma below, a reminder that this is a living, breathing landscape shaped by the same forces that built the entire Tengger massif.
