A Crossroads of the Mojave Subdivision
This camera overlooks the Mojave Yard, a key staging point on Union Pacific's Mojave Subdivision near Mile Post 380. Positioned beside Highway 58, the yard channels a constant flow of freight traffic climbing toward the famous Tehachapi Pass.
Where Two Railroads Meet
South of the yard, the BNSF line to Barstow branches away from the UP mainline, while the route to Palmdale continues onward. Near the north end, the historic Searles (Jawbone) Branch crosses Highway 58 at grade, carrying heavy trains of soda ash, trona and mined materials.
High Desert Railfanning
Set in the wide-open Mojave Desert of Kern County, this is a beloved vantage for railfans worldwide. Unit coal trains, intermodal consists and helper locomotives all pass through, making the yard a perpetually busy stage for live train watching.
