Mikuni Sunset Beach Breakwater

A Classic Stretch of the Echizen Coast

Mikuni Sunset Beach is one of the most beloved swimming and strolling beaches in Fukui Prefecture, set where the Echizen coastline meets the open Sea of Japan. The wide arc of pale sand and the sheltered bay make it a signature stop along this stretch of northern Honshu.

The Breakwater and the Bay

A long stone breakwater and rocky jetty divide the calm inner waters from the open sea, sheltering small craft and offering a favourite vantage for anglers. Beyond it the horizon stretches uninterrupted across the vast expanse of water.

Mikuni Town and the Hot-Spring Terrace

The camera looks out from the terrace of the Mikuni Onsen hot-spring complex, with the wooded hills and houses of the historic port town of Mikuni climbing the slopes to the right. An observation tower marks the headland that closes the bay.

Visiting the Coast

Part of the Echizen-Kaga Kaigan Quasi-National Park region, the beach draws visitors to its broad sands and its sweeping outlook over the Sea of Japan, a scenic highlight of the Sakai shoreline.
