Everything you need to know about this live stream
A Restored Wetland Sanctuary
Lokkisaari is a two-hectare islet in Lake Ahtialanjärvi, near Lempäälä in the Pirkanmaa region. Decades of dedicated management — annual scything, control of invasive reed grass and the creation of open mudflats — have shaped it into one of inland Finland's richest shorebird habitats.
Waterfowl and Waders
The camera captures a diverse assembly of birds: gulls, terns, ducks and the Common Pochard, whose local population has flourished thanks to purpose-built artificial reefs and nest-box networks. As many as thirty-six wader species have been recorded here, making it a compelling spot for observation.
A Haven Built by Conservation
Since the first artificial reefs were laid, breeding numbers of Common and Tufted Pochard and Common Tern have risen dramatically, even as these species decline elsewhere in the country. The islet stands as a model of what determined habitat restoration can achieve.
Watching from Afar
Thanks to its compact size and abundant birdlife, Lokkisaari is an ideal subject for a live camera. Viewers can follow the ebb and flow of the colony throughout the breeding season and glimpse the rarities that a wetland of this stature regularly attracts.
