A Crossroads of Two Historic Railroads
The camera overlooks the point where CSX's Monon Subdivision (the former Monon Railroad) crosses Norfolk Southern's Lafayette District (the former Wabash Railroad). This heritage makes the junction one of Indiana's most storied stretches of working track.
Around the Clock Freight Action
Roughly 24 trains pass daily, including about 20 Norfolk Southern freights and 4 CSX freights. A 20 MPH speed limit through the terminal area keeps the long consists rolling slowly enough to appreciate every locomotive and car.
Amtrak's Cardinal
Three times a week, Amtrak's Cardinal linking Chicago and Washington, D.C. threads through Lafayette. The nearby Lafayette Amtrak station (code LAF) lies just out of frame to the south.
A Hub for Railfans
Hosted by Rail and Road Auctions, this pan-tilt-zoom view sits about 120 miles southeast of Chicago. The illuminated signal gantry and frequent movements have made it a favourite among the millions who follow live train cameras across the region.
