Standing 29 meters tall, the wooden Kugelbake has guided sailors at the mouth of the Elbe for centuries, once marking the boundary between river and open sea. Protected today as a historic monument, it remains the enduring symbol of Cuxhaven.

Where the Elbe Meets the North Sea

The camera looks out over the Elbe estuary, the busy waterway linking Hamburg's port to the open ocean. Cargo ships, sailboats and ferries regularly cross the frame, tracing the tidal channel toward the horizon.

Döse's Coastal Promenade

Below the landmark, a grassy dike path and wide sandy beach draw walkers, cyclists and kite flyers from the seaside district of Döse. Rows of wicker beach chairs line the shore, a hallmark of Germany's North Sea resorts.
