A Town Built on the Sea

Kristiansund sits where the open Atlantic meets the sheltered waters of the Kristiansundet sound, its districts scattered across the islands of Kirkelandet, Innlandet, Nordlandet and Gomalandet. From this commanding hillside vantage the camera takes in the working harbour, the ferry quays and the tightly packed rows of houses that climb the slopes of the town centre.

Landmarks on the Skyline

The distinctive red waterfront warehouse anchors the view, while a wooded ridge rises behind the centre topped by a slender broadcast mast. Church spires, harbourside cranes and the pastel facades of the sentrum give the panorama its layered, maritime character.

Maritime Heritage

Long one of Norway's great klippfisk (salted, dried cod) ports, Kristiansund grew wealthy on the fish trade, and its quays and warehouses still reflect that seafaring legacy. The protected sound remains a busy passage for fishing boats, the local Sundbåten harbour ferries and visiting vessels.
