A Nest on Wellington's Waterfront
This live camera looks into a purpose-built nest box on the shore of Evans Bay, near Wellington's Greta Point. The box was installed by a penguin conservation partnership with a national science research institute, giving researchers and the public a rare window into the private life of a breeding colony.
Meet the Kororā
The kororā, also known as the little blue penguin, is the smallest penguin species on Earth. Standing barely thirty centimetres tall, these birds nest in burrows and dense coastal vegetation, heading out to sea to fish and returning to feed their chicks.
An Infrared View Into the Burrow
An infrared-equipped camera keeps watch over the burrow entrance, allowing viewers to follow the colony's activity in both daylight and darkness. The shadowed opening visible at the edge of the frame is the tunnel the penguins use to reach the open water.
A Conservation Window
By streaming this hidden corner of the colony live, the project raises awareness of urban penguin populations and the coastal habitat they depend on, turning a quiet nest box into a public conservation classroom.
