Kongobu-ji Head Temple, Koyasan
OnlineThis camera looks out over the vermillion halls of Kongobu-ji, the head temple of Shingon Buddhism perched on the forested slopes of Mount Koya. Its tiled roofs and lacquered timber galleries have overseen the sacred mountain complex for centuries, framed by ancient cedar groves. As the administrative heart of the Koyasan pilgrimage, the temple draws visitors tracing one of Japan's most storied Buddhist routes.

The Head Temple of Shingon Buddhism
Kongobu-ji serves as the administrative headquarters of the Koyasan Shingon sect, overseeing more than a hundred affiliated temples scattered across the mountain. Its name, meaning "temple of the diamond mountain," reflects the esoteric Buddhist teachings first brought to this site by the monk Kobo Daishi in the early ninth century.
A UNESCO World Heritage Landscape
The temple sits within Koyasan, part of the Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Vermillion-lacquered halls and steep hipped roofs stand among towering cedar forests, a setting that has sheltered monastic life for over a thousand years.
Renowned Gardens and Inner Halls
Behind its formal reception rooms lies the Banryutei rock garden, one of Japan's largest karesansui compositions, its raked gravel said to evoke a pair of dragons emerging from clouds. Painted screens and ornate wooden interiors connect the temple's ceremonial halls to the mountain's quieter monastic courtyards.
Gateway to Mount Koya's Pilgrim Trails
Kongobu-ji anchors a network of pilgrimage paths linking Koyasan's temple town to the nearby Danjo Garan sacred precinct and the forested approach to Okunoin. Generations of pilgrims have climbed this mountain to pay respects at the birthplace of Japanese Shingon Buddhism.
