The Lava Lake Inside Halemaʻumaʻu

This camera looks down on the lava lake that pools on the floor of Halemaʻumaʻu, the summit crater of Kīlauea in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. During eruptive phases, molten rock rises through vents and spreads across the crater floor in broad, glowing sheets, its surface crusting over into dark plates that crack and shift to reveal the bright lava beneath.

Why the View Glows at Night

The lava lake is at its most dramatic after dark, when there is no daylight to wash out the incandescence. Temperatures near 1,000 °C make the molten surface radiate deep orange and yellow light that reflects off the steam and gas plume above it, while small spattering vents fling bright fragments along the lake's edges.

One of Earth's Most Active Volcanoes

Kīlauea is a shield volcano on the southeastern flank of the Big Island and ranks among the most active on the planet. Its summit eruptions are monitored continuously by the United States Geological Survey, and the repeated filling and draining of the crater floor reshape the landscape with every episode of activity.

In Hawaiian tradition Halemaʻumaʻu is the home of Pele, the goddess of fire and volcanoes, and the lava lake carries deep cultural meaning. The summit draws scientists, cultural practitioners, and visitors who come to witness the raw, ongoing creation of the islands.
