A Falcon's Perch Above the City

Mounted high on the E-Building of the Vienna International Centre, this fisheye-lens camera peers into a snug nesting box built specifically for one of the city's most agile birds of prey. Eurasian kestrels have claimed this concrete ledge, transforming an unassuming corner of UN office architecture into a functioning falcon aerie overlooking the rooftops and greenery of Donaustadt.

Raising a Family in Full View

Inside the nest, downy chicks huddle together as they grow from hatchlings into fledglings ready to test their wings. The wide-angle view captures every stage of development — feeding visits, wing-stretching, and the gradual shedding of down for feathers — offering an unfiltered window into kestrel parenting rarely seen outside specialist research.

A Joint Conservation Project

The nest box and its camera are the product of a collaboration between the City of Vienna's Environmental Protection Department (MA22), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), and the VIC's own Facility Management Services. Together they turned a stretch of institutional rooftop into a haven for urban wildlife, proving that even a busy international headquarters can double as a sanctuary for birds of prey.

Kestrels in the Urban Skyline

Eurasian kestrels are known for hovering almost motionless above open ground while hunting, and this rooftop vantage point puts that behavior on full display against the city skyline. The Danube-side setting gives the birds easy access to parks and green corridors, making the Vienna International Centre an unlikely but thriving outpost for one of Europe's most recognizable raptors.
