Kaaba Colonnade Overlook

An Elevated Vantage on the Mataf

This camera looks diagonally across the mataf, the marble plaza encircling the Kaaba at the heart of Masjid al-Haram. From this angle the sweeping arcs of pilgrims performing tawaf unfold beneath a long run of golden-trimmed colonnades.

The Kaaba and Its Kiswah

Draped in the black Kiswah and banded with gold calligraphy, the cube-shaped Kaaba anchors the composition, the fixed point toward which Muslims worldwide direct their prayer.

Architecture of the Grand Mosque

Tiered marble colonnades, arched galleries and towering minarets radiate outward from the mataf, the product of successive royal expansions that turned the sanctuary into one of the largest religious complexes on Earth.

A Living Center of Pilgrimage

Streams of visitors in white ihram cloth move without pause around the Kaaba, a rhythm of devotion that continues year-round through Hajj and Umrah.
