The Islet and Its Sentinel Statue

Jiangong Islet is a rocky outcrop of barely 500 square metres guarding the mouth of the Wujiang Creek near Kinmen's South Gate. Crowning it stands a colossal white statue of Zheng Chenggong, the Ming-dynasty hero known as Koxinga, gazing across the strait toward Gulangyu in mainland China, where a twin statue faces back.

The Sea-Parting Tidal Causeway

Often called Kinmen's own parting of the sea, a paved stone causeway surfaces as the tide retreats, allowing visitors to stroll out to the islet on foot. Lining the path are the striking giant oystermen sculptures, a tribute to Kinmen's centuries-old oyster-harvesting heritage and among the area's most photographed landmarks.

A Storied Military Outpost

For decades Jiangong served as a frontline sentry post in the contested waters between Taiwan and the mainland. Today its well-preserved bunkers and gun emplacements can be explored in minutes, offering a vivid sense of the lives of the soldiers once stationed on this lonely rock.

Wildlife of the Intertidal Zone

As the water recedes it reveals a rich intertidal flat teeming with crabs, mudskippers and shellfish, drawing flocks of wading birds to feed. The camera sets this living shoreline against the broad blue waters of Xiamen Bay, an ever-changing seascape suspended between two coasts.
