The Grand Road of Puri
This camera overlooks the Bada Danda, the celebrated Grand Road of Puri, a wide ceremonial avenue stretching from the Shree Jagannath Temple toward the Gundicha Temple. It is one of the most storied thoroughfares in eastern India, lined with shrines, monasteries and pilgrim lodges.
Rath Yatra and the Sacred Chariots
The Grand Road is the stage for the Rath Yatra, the great chariot festival in which three colossal wooden chariots carry the deities Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra. Each chariot is hand-built anew from sacred timber by hereditary artisans, an extraordinary feat of traditional carpentry.
The Shree Jagannath Temple
Rising beside the avenue is the 12th-century Shree Jagannath Temple, a masterpiece of Kalinga architecture and one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites. Its soaring tower dominates the skyline of this ancient coastal city.
Pilgrimage and Heritage
Puri draws millions of devotees and travellers, making it one of India's foremost spiritual destinations. The view captures the living devotional culture that has animated this place for centuries.
