A West-Facing View Over Tangier Sound
This camera looks out from Jack and Pickles across the harbor of Ewell, the largest village on Smith Island, with open water stretching toward Tangier Sound in the Chesapeake Bay.
Maryland's Only Inhabited Offshore Island
Smith Island sits roughly 12 miles from the Eastern Shore, reachable only by boat, and is made up of several marshy islands linked by causeways. Ewell, Rhodes Point, and Tylerton are its three historic villages.
A Working Waterfront
Generations of watermen have crabbed, fished, and harvested oysters in these waters. Weathered docks, crab shanties, and small workboats line the shore, largely unchanged for decades.
Home of the Smith Island Cake
The island gave rise to Maryland's official state dessert, the Smith Island Cake โ a tower of eight to fifteen thin layers traditionally finished with rich chocolate fudge frosting.
