This camera overlooks a natural osprey nest built atop a lakeside tree in Ilomantsi, deep in Finland's North Karelia. The resident pair, Mateli and Manu, return each spring to raise a new brood, offering an intimate view of one of Europe's most elegant fish-hunting raptors.

Ilomantsi lies on the Russian border and marks the continental easternmost point of the European Union. The surrounding landscape of glassy lakes, peat bogs and endless pine forest is classic Finnish wilderness, home to a rich variety of birdlife.

Life at the Nest

Viewers can follow the full breeding cycle — incubation, hatching and the growth of the chicks — as the adults deliver fresh fish caught from the waters below. The ospreys are ringed and monitored by local ornithologists as part of an ongoing conservation effort.

The nest cam operates under a nature-protection permit and is maintained by the Ilomantsi Tourism Association together with the North Karelia ornithological society, blending wildlife observation with regional conservation.
