A Mainline on the Overland Route
The camera frames Union Pacific's Laramie Subdivision at milepost 565.4, a segment of the legendary Overland Route that climbs the west slope of Sherman Hill. This corridor carries some of the heaviest freight tonnage in the American West, with long strings of intermodal, manifest, coal and grain consists passing in steady succession.
The Historic Laramie Depot
In the foreground stands the Laramie Railroad Depot, whose platform remains visible even though scheduled passenger service ended in 1997 with the discontinuation of Amtrak's Pioneer. The restored brick station is a local landmark and a window onto the town's deep railroading roots.
A Railfanning Vantage
As a pan-tilt-zoom view, the cam follows approaching headlights, frames the locomotives, and lingers on the rolling stock โ an immersive perch for spotting power, paint schemes and unusual cars on a continuously active line.
Laramie, Wyoming
Set on the high plains of southeastern Wyoming at over 7,000 feet, Laramie grew up around the railroad. The depot district anchors the historic downtown, a fitting backdrop for one of the great trainspotting locations of the Mountain West.
