A Working Riviera Harbour

The Port de la Darse is the older of Villefranche-sur-Mer's two harbours, a compact basin packed with colourful fishing boats, sailing yachts and motor cruisers. The camera captures the gentle choreography of vessels manoeuvring between the moorings and the open bay.

History Carved in Stone

Built under the Dukes of Savoy, the darse (inner dock) is framed by a centuries-old stone breakwater and the squat red navigational beacon that marks its narrow entrance. The surrounding quays preserve the timeless character of a traditional Mediterranean port.

The Bay of Villefranche

Beyond the breakwater opens one of the deepest natural harbours on the Côte d'Azur, a sheltered anchorage that has welcomed everything from naval fleets to towering superyachts. Pastel villas and lush gardens rise in tiers along the steep hillside behind.

What to Watch

Look for yachts and tenders gliding past the jetty, leisurely harbour activity along the docks, and the ever-changing maritime traffic of this iconic stretch of the French Riviera.
