Hildesheim Market Square

A Medieval Marketplace Reborn

Hildesheim's Marktplatz is one of northern Germany's most admired market squares, a tightly framed ensemble of gabled facades that anchors the old town. Though the buildings were meticulously reconstructed after wartime damage, their carved timber frames and painted friezes faithfully echo the square's medieval layout.

The Knochenhaueramtshaus & Guild Heritage

Dominating the eastern side is the Knochenhaueramtshaus, the former butchers' guild hall and arguably the most famous half-timbered building in Germany. Its steeply stacked oriel windows and richly carved beams showcase the wealth and pride of Hildesheim's medieval craft guilds.

Rathaus and Rolandbrunnen

Opposite stands the historic town hall, a protected landmark whose stepped gable closes the square to the west. In front of it, the Rolandbrunnen fountain has long served as a traditional meeting point for townspeople and visitors alike.

A Living Heart of Hildesheim

Beyond its architecture, the Marktplatz remains a lively civic stage — home to markets, festivals, and the everyday rhythm of café terraces beneath the arcaded Bäckeramtshaus, making it the undisputed social heart of the old town.
