Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary

The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary encompasses approximately 1,400 square miles of shallow, warm waters around the main Hawaiian Islands. The waters off Maui โ€” particularly the channel between Maui, Molokai, Lanai, and Kahoolawe โ€” serve as the primary winter breeding, calving, and nursing habitat for North Pacific humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae). The sanctuary was designated in 1992 and jointly managed by NOAA and the State of Hawaii to protect this critical marine ecosystem.

Humpback Whale Migration and Behavior

Each year, North Pacific humpback whales migrate thousands of miles from their cold Alaskan feeding grounds to the warm Hawaiian waters, arriving between November and May. The Maui channel's shallow, protected waters are ideal for newborn calves to develop and for competitive male groups to display. Visitors can observe spectacular surface behaviors including breaching, tail-slapping, and spy-hopping from shore or whale-watching vessels.

Marine Biodiversity of the Maui Channel

Beyond humpback whales, the sanctuary's waters support a rich array of marine life, including spinner dolphins, Hawaiian monk seals, green sea turtles (Honu), and diverse reef fish. The coastal waters off Kihei provide clear visibility and a backdrop of the West Maui Mountains and neighboring islands visible on the horizon.

Conservation and Research

The sanctuary serves as a major research and educational hub for cetacean science. The visitor center in Kihei coordinates whale counts, acoustic monitoring, and public outreach. Hydrophone arrays in the channel record the hauntingly complex humpback whale songs produced by males during the breeding season โ€” some of the most studied vocalizations in the animal kingdom.
