A Barrier Island on Florida's Forgotten Coast
St. George Island is a 22-mile sliver of sand separating Apalachicola Bay from the open Gulf of Mexico. This camera captures its signature wide, flat beach, where shallow turquoise water meets some of the whitest quartz sand in the United States.
Bob Sikes Cut
The view takes in the shoreline near Bob Sikes Cut, a man-made pass dredged at the island's western end to link the Gulf with the bay. Its rock jetties draw anglers, while the channel funnels boats between the harbor at Apalachicola and the open sea.
Dunes, Sea Oats and Sea Turtles
Behind the beach rise rolling dunes anchored by protected sea oats. The island is an important loggerhead and green sea turtle nesting ground, and the undeveloped strand offers quiet habitat for shorebirds and crabs.
A Quiet Coastal Escape
Far less crowded than Florida's larger resorts, St. George Island is prized for its laid-back rhythm of beachcombing, shelling and fishing. Much of its eastern end is preserved within St. George Island State Park.
