Guillemot Colony on the Farne Islands
OnlineThousands of guillemots crowd the weathered sea stacks of the Farne Islands, one of Britain's most important seabird sanctuaries. The camera looks out across a steep cliff ledge packed with breeding birds, with the open North Sea stretching to the horizon behind them. Watch the colony jostle, preen and call as part of a vast gathering of around 200,000 seabirds.
About This Webcam
Everything you need to know about this live stream
A teeming seabird city
The Farne Islands host one of the largest guillemot colonies in the British Isles, where birds pack shoulder to shoulder across every available ledge. The dense, chalk-white streaked rock is testament to generations of nesting seabirds returning to the same cliffs.
Life on the ledges
Guillemots lay their single pear-shaped eggs directly on the bare rock, relying on sheer numbers for safety. Through the camera you can watch parents incubating, swapping shifts and defending their tiny patch from neighbours in the crowded colony.
Part of a protected archipelago
Cared for by the National Trust, the Farne Islands sit off the Northumberland coast and shelter razorbills, kittiwakes, shags and the famous puffins alongside the guillemots. Grey seals haul out on the surrounding rocks, making the islands a cornerstone of UK wildlife conservation.
A window to the wild
This live view brings the raw energy of a working seabird colony directly to you. Listen for the constant growling calls of the guillemots and look for the jumplings โ young chicks that will eventually leap from the cliffs to the sea below.
