A Storied Approach
This narrow lane forms the traditional pedestrian approach to Ginkaku-ji, the Temple of the Silver Pavilion, one of Kyoto's most celebrated Zen Buddhist sites and part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto UNESCO World Heritage ensemble. Wooden shopfronts and low stone walls line the route much as they have for generations of visitors.
Sakyo Ward's Temple District
Nestled at the foot of the Higashiyama hills in Kyoto's Sakyo Ward, the lane connects the residential streets of the neighborhood to the temple precinct, sitting close to the famous Philosopher's Path that traces the nearby canal.
A Living Streetscape
Small shops selling local crafts and refreshments occupy traditional wooden buildings along the approach, their tiled roofs and sliding doors preserving the character of old Kyoto against the surrounding greenery.
