Fehmarnbelt Tunnel Construction
OnlineWatch the colossal Fehmarnbelt Tunnel take shape at the Rødbyhavn work harbour, the launchpad for the world's longest immersed road and rail tunnel. Towering cranes, casting basins and breakwaters line the coast as crews assemble the giant concrete elements destined to link Denmark and Germany beneath the Baltic Sea — a monumental feat of engineering.

The World's Largest Immersed Tunnel
The Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link is an 18-kilometre immersed tunnel under construction across the Fehmarn Belt strait, designed to carry both a four-lane motorway and a twin-track electrified railway. When complete it will be the longest combined road and rail tunnel on the planet, slashing the journey between Scandinavia and central Europe.
Inside the Rødbyhavn Construction Yard
This camera overlooks the vast work harbour at Rødbyhavn, on the Danish island of Lolland, where the tunnel's massive concrete elements are cast in a purpose-built factory. Gantry cranes, casting basins, breakwaters and reclaimed land dominate a site engineered specifically to manufacture and float out each enormous section.
Connecting Denmark and Germany
Once finished, the link will join Rødbyhavn in Denmark with Puttgarden in Germany, replacing the traditional ferry crossing with a direct fixed connection beneath the Baltic Sea and reshaping freight and passenger travel across the region.
A Landmark of Modern Engineering
One of Europe's largest infrastructure projects, the Fehmarnbelt undertaking showcases large-scale civil engineering at an extraordinary scale, from offshore wind turbines on the horizon to the relentless choreography of heavy machinery shaping the coastline.
