A Castle Town in the Mountains
The city of Echizen Ono grew around a hilltop castle founded in the sixteenth century, and its orderly street grid still follows the old castle-town plan. This vantage looks out over the whole Ono basin, one of the highest and most isolated urban valleys in Fukui Prefecture.
The Okuetsu Highlands
Ono sits deep in the Okuetsu region, a landscape of steep forested ridges and fast mountain rivers. The valley is celebrated for its spring water, its terraced fields, and some of the heaviest snowfall in central Japan.
Watching the Basin
