This camera looks inside a nest box tucked within a barn in Southern Indiana, home to a pair of barn owls (Tyto alba). Listed as endangered in the state, these pale, heart-faced hunters are rarely seen by the public, making this private vantage a genuine privilege for wildlife watchers.

A Conservation Success Story

The box is one of more than 300 barn owl nest boxes placed by the Indiana DNR Division of Fish & Wildlife since 1984 to counter habitat loss. The owls have nested in this barn since 2009, returning faithfully to raise their owlets in the safety of the sheltered structure.

Life Inside the Nest Box

Viewers may witness incubation, hatching, feeding and the gradual growth of downy owlets. An infrared sensor keeps the interior visible around the clock without disturbing the birds, revealing the quiet rhythms of a family of owls that the world almost never gets to see.

Watching Responsibly

Because this is wild nature, natural events can be hard to watch, and the DNR does not intervene in routine outcomes. The feed supports the Indiana Nongame Wildlife Fund, whose work helps secure a future for barn owls and other vulnerable species across the state.
