Dewey Beach Osprey Nest Cam

A Lions Club Conservation Project

This nest platform in Dewey Beach was placed by the local Lions Club to give a resident pair of ospreys a stable, predator-safe spot to raise their young, tucked into a park just steps from the North Beach businesses along the shoreline. Each season the pair returns to rebuild and reinforce the same sprawling raft of sticks and dried grasses, a ritual repeated by ospreys along the entire Atlantic coast.

Life Above the Bay

Perched high above the water, the nest offers a sweeping vantage over a tidal inlet dotted with private docks, pleasure boats and waterfront homes. From this elevated post the resident raptors watch over their territory, exchange incubation duties, and defend the nest from other birds drawn to the same rich fishing grounds.

A Keystone Coastal Predator

The osprey, sometimes called the fish hawk, is one of the most widespread birds of prey in the world and a reliable indicator of a healthy coastal ecosystem. Nearly every meal it brings back to the nest is a fish plucked feet-first from the shallow waters below, a hunting technique found in no other North American raptor.

Watching a Family Grow

Viewers can follow the entire arc of the breeding season here, from the laying of the first egg through hatching and fledging, as the Dewey Beach pair tends their growing brood in full view of the camera. It is a rare, sustained look at raptor parenting that few backyard birdwatchers ever get to witness.
