Everything you need to know about this live stream
A Millennium of Buddhist Heritage
Daigoji Temple traces its origins to the year 874, when the monk Shobo founded a mountain retreat that grew into one of Kyoto's most significant Shingon Buddhist complexes. Its sprawling grounds preserve centuries of continuous worship and pilgrimage.
Kami-Daigo and Shimo-Daigo
The temple is divided into two zones: Shimo-Daigo, the lower precinct with its main halls and gardens, and Kami-Daigo, a cluster of mountaintop halls reached by a wooded trail. This layered geography gives the complex a genuinely immersive pilgrimage character.
Sanboin Garden and the Five-Story Pagoda
Within the lower precinct, the Sanboin subtemple houses an elaborate Momoyama-period garden built around a central pond, while the nearby five-story pagoda, dating to 951, ranks among the oldest wooden structures still standing in Kyoto.
A UNESCO World Heritage Landmark
Daigoji is inscribed as part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its architectural and cultural significance spanning more than eleven centuries.
