A Sacred Lakeside Sanctuary
Futarasan Jinja Chūgūshi is the lakeside branch of Nikkō Futarasan Shrine, one of the three great shrines of the Nikkō UNESCO World Heritage area. Positioned on the northern shore of Lake Chuzenji, it has served pilgrims for over a millennium as the gateway to the sacred ascent of Mount Nantai.
Mount Nantai and the Mountain Cult
The shrine's torii gate frames the base of Mount Nantai, an active stratovolcano long worshipped as the deity of the region. Priests and climbers still depart from this precinct each summer to complete the traditional pilgrimage to its 2,486-meter summit.
Traditional Architecture in a Forest Setting
Vermilion halls, stone lanterns, and a wooden torii gate stand amid dense cedar and pine forest, reflecting the layered wood-and-lacquer craftsmanship characteristic of Nikkō's shrine complexes. The lakeside setting distinguishes Chūgūshi from its more famous downtown counterpart.
Watching the Shrine and Lake Chuzenji
This camera offers a continuous view of the shrine grounds and the surrounding shoreline of Lake Chuzenji, a caldera lake formed by the eruption of Mount Nantai. It is a window onto one of the most revered spiritual landscapes in the Nikkō National Park.
