An Iconic Active Stratovolcano
The Chaparrastique volcano, also known as the San Miguel Volcano, is a steep-sided stratovolcano and one of the most frequently active in Central America. Its symmetrical cone reaches roughly 2,130 metres, crowned by a deep summit crater that has produced numerous eruptions and ash emissions throughout recorded history.
What the Camera Shows
This monitoring camera frames the full cone from base to crater, capturing the lush green forest that blankets the flanks and the barren upper slopes scarred by old lava flows. The wide field of view also reveals the agricultural lowlands and coffee-growing terrain that ring the volcano.
Location & Surroundings
Chaparrastique towers over the eastern department of San Miguel in El Salvador, close to the country's third-largest city. The fertile volcanic soils support extensive coffee plantations, while the commanding peak remains a landmark visible across the eastern plains.
Volcanic Monitoring
Operated as part of El Salvador's official environmental observation network, this feed supports the continuous surveillance of one of the nation's highest-risk volcanoes. Viewers can watch a scientifically significant peak whose activity is tracked closely by national authorities.
