A Living Site of Shikoku Pilgrimage
Byōdōji Temple is the twenty-second sacred site on the Shikoku 88-temple pilgrimage route, a centuries-old circuit linking sites associated with the monk Kūkai. Pilgrims known as ohenro have walked this path for generations, and the temple's main hall remains a living center of daily practice.
The Enshrined Buddha of Healing
The temple's principal image is Yakushi Nyorai, the Medicine Buddha, venerated for bringing physical and spiritual healing to those who visit. Gilded altars, ornamental lanterns, and layered offerings surround the honzon, reflecting generations of devotional craftsmanship.
A Window for Remote Worship
This camera lets visitors from anywhere observe the temple's rituals as they unfold, from daily services to seasonal ceremonies. The continuous broadcast extends the tradition of pilgrimage to those who cannot travel to Tokushima Prefecture in person.
Anan, Gateway to Southern Tokushima
Byōdōji sits in the city of Anan, on Japan's Shikoku island, amid the wooded hills that shelter many of the pilgrimage's rural temples. Its quiet setting contrasts with the temple's role as a well-known waypoint for pilgrims completing the historic circuit.
