The Western Gateway of the Kiel Canal
This camera overlooks the lock complex at Brunsbüttel, the western entrance of the Nord-Ostsee-Kanal, internationally known as the Kiel Canal. Stretching roughly 98 kilometres to Kiel-Holtenau, it links the North Sea with the Baltic and ranks among the most heavily used artificial waterways on Earth.
A Procession of International Shipping
The lock chambers handle a steady flow of container ships, freighters, tankers and cruise vessels moving between the canal and the Elbe estuary. Each transit is a study in precise water-level control and maritime traffic management.
Engineering on the North Sea Edge
Beyond the lock gates rise rows of gantry cranes and the distinctive Brunsbüttel high bridge, a landmark spanning about 2.8 kilometres with a clearance of some 42 metres. The horizon is dotted with wind turbines, a hallmark of the northern German coast.
Where Two Seas Connect
Sitting at the threshold of the open North Sea, the site captures the meeting of industrial waterway engineering and the wide tidal landscape of the Elbe mouth, a vantage point for anyone fascinated by ships and coastal infrastructure.
